Joshua Barrett

2025-26 Leader Fellow
Tulsa Classical Academy

B.A. in Classics & Early Christian Literature, Ave Maria University
MSc in Ancient Worlds (Archeology & Classics), University of Edinburgh (in progress, class of 2025)

Mr. Barrett grew up homeschooled in rural Georgia, before entering trade school to become a welder. After feeling called to further education, he went back to college and through his love of history he stumbled upon the beauty of the Latin and Greek languages and their ancient literature. From there, he learned of the classical education movement, and the rest is history. After graduating with his B.A. in Classics & Early Christian Literature from Ave Maria University, Mr. Barrett immediately began pursuing his Master of Science in Ancient Worlds (Archeology & Classics) from the University of Edinburgh, studying online while working full-time as a teacher of Latin and Ancient History. He is finishing his dissertation on how the Greek concept of the polis influenced early Christian ecclesiology, and is graduating this summer.

With a unique background in various forms of learning, Mr. Barrett is determined to spend his life in the field of classical education and its noble mission, and he is both grateful and eager to begin working alongside Hillsdale as a K-12 Leader Fellow.

Vision
I envision my future as one in leadership within the classical education mission. While I felt called for a long time to be only a Latin teacher, and I loved every second of it, I believe I have a certain ability to lead well, and to do so with the soul of a teacher. While serving as the 6th grade team lead at Naples Classical Academy, I found a love for the responsibility of discipline and the mission of instilling student virtue. I realized I had certain talents beyond the classroom, and I wish to put these to good use. I believe that each of us, regardless of our comfort with the notion, are given by God certain talents that we are meant to utilize to further the cause of the good. With the support that Hillsdale provides, I believe I can offer good leadership in this noble pursuit of reclaiming education for the soul of mankind and our nation. I see myself doing whatever I can to help this mission grow, and to provide the best team to see it done effectively.
