Boots on the ground training for aspiring school leaders

The Hillsdale College K-12 Education Office supports school leader fellowship positions at five of our member schools each year, and a sixth sustaining fellowship at Hillsdale Academy.

Each fellowship is a one-year paid engagement that combines an apprenticeship under one of our top school leaders with a professional development program designed for those aspiring to lead a Hillsdale-affiliated K-12 classical school. In addition to full-time responsibilities at the school, leader fellows participate in K-12 education conferences, visits to other member schools, book studies, and leadership training.

Rolling admissions for 2026-2027 leader fellow openings is underway.

Qualifications for Fellowship Consideration

Strong fellowship candidates possess an unshakable commitment to forming an educated and self-governing sovereign through K-12 schools built to train the minds and improve the hearts of students through a content-rich, classical education in the liberal arts and sciences, with instruction in the principles of moral character and civic virtue. We seek leader fellows who are smart, humble, industrious and delight in working with young people in their formation into flourishing and productive American citizens.

Individuals who are a likely fit, include:

  • Current Teachers
Teachers can make excellent leaders because they are keenly aware of the needs of the classroom and how to support other teachers.
  • Advanced Degree Holders
Multiple areas of Master or Ph.D. levels of study provide excellent preparation to transition to school leadership through the fellowship program. Examples include classical education, master of business administration (MBA).
  • Military Veterans
Many strong leaders found a fulfilling second career in K-12 education after serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. The skills honed and experiences gained in those professions often translate well to the world of school leadership.
  • Corporate Executive Leaders
Running a school requires strong business management and team leadership skills. The fellowship program provides an excellent transition from the corporate world into a K-12 school.
